Guatemala is the most populous country in Central America and its capital, Guatemala City, is accessible with many direct flights from South, Central, and North America, and Europe. Most travelers can reach Guatemala City with just one connecting flights from their home airport. From La Aurora International Airport (in Guatemala City) tourist shuttles and taxis convey travelers at all hours of day and night directly to lodging in La Antigua, which is about one hour from the airport.

La Antigua is a small and compact pedestrian-friendly colonial city of some 50,000 inhabitants. As a UNESCO world-heritage site it is the primary tourist destination for Guatemalans as well as for international travelers. More than 100 lodging options ranging from hostels, AirBnB rentals, and 5-star hotels are available within a compact one square kilometer area (e.g., TripAdvisor.co or Booking.com). Of these more than half, including about 15 of the 30 three-star hotels are priced economically, at less than $50 per night. Countless dining options, including local and international cuisine, are available both within and external to hotels. Food options are available for all budgets.
La Antigua’s popularity is due in part to its dramatic setting surrounded by its famous volcanoes, Agua (conference logo), Fuego, and Acatenango. As Guatemala’s principal tourist destination, cultural attractions, including cathedrals, markets, and plazas, are ideal for exploration by foot and the city is oriented in an easy-to-navigate gridded layout. Antigua is very safe by Guatemalan standards and tourist police and agencies such as Programa de Asistencia al Turista (PROATUR) and the División de Seguridad Turística (DISETUR) exist to facilitate any problems visitors may experience. English is widely-spoken and understood throughout La Antigua.
